There's a saying in winemaking circles that it takes a lot of beer to make great wine.
Usually it's the volume of lager and ale consumed during harvest by thirsty winery workers that inspires that adage, but in the case of Sandhill's Howard Soon it speaks to his prior work experience.
He spent five years at Labatt Brewing Company before landing in the Okanagan Valley in 1980 to start his winemaking career at Calona Vineyards.

Down to their last chance to experience success on college basketball's biggest stage, seniors Ryan Wittman, Louis Dale and Jeff Foote paced the school to its first win in five NCAA appearances.
Dale scored 21 points and Wittman, the Ivy League player of the year, had 20 for the Big Red, who led the nation in 3-point shooting this season and have three other elements — strong guard play, experienced leadership and a 7-foot center in Foote — that make them a threat to play beyond the first weekend of the

Forgotten amid all that angst over Purdue's NCAA tournament chances without Robbie Hummel: The Boilermakers still have Keaton Grant.

That opened up the inside for teammate JuJuan Johnson's 23 points and rallied fourth-seeded Purdue past No. 13 seed Siena 72-64 on Friday in the first round of the South Regional.

PLANS for 325 houses and a health centre on farmland at Wold View in Market Weighton have been given the go-ahead by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
But town councillor Peter Hemmerman has claimed that the development "is not in the best interests of the town".
He says that although one fifth of the town is going to be rebuilt, "only 22 of the 325 homes are likely to be affordable," despite council recommendations.
